Volleyball.
My sister Devin and I started DK Beach Volleyball because we wanted more young players near us to have a way into the sand game.

a court closer to home
We had been traveling to Massachusetts to train, and the closest sand facility to home was about two hours away. Parents kept asking how their daughters could learn the same skills. We started by asking players and families whether theyβd be interested in local clinics.
We found a quiet public beach court with a new net, checked the rules with the Town of Fairfield, and built our plan around it. Using a public court kept travel and facility costs down. We charged less than half the price of comparable instruction.

what a session looked like
We kept groups to twelve players and ran two-hour sessions several times a week, avoiding the midday heat. Devin and I split coaching and playing roles, made lesson plans, and mixed drills with games. We worked on reading the court, moving in sand and placing the ball with a purpose.
There was plenty to organize off the court too: signups, emergency contacts, liability acknowledgments and weather makeups. Word of mouth brought in players from Connecticut and Westchester. Ice cream afterward helped turn a group of players into friends.
Two participants went on to medal at tournaments. For me, the biggest lesson was how much familiesβ trust matters. If we grow the clinics, I want to keep the same personal attention and make sure the court time and coaching can keep up.
